What is one of the scariest movie scenes you know? For me, it has to be the subway peddler scene from THE WIZ (1978), one of my all-time favorite films. It’s a slow, wordless nightmare, with no payoff: the last time we see the clown puppets, they’re still nonchalantly roaming the subway, looking for prey.
When Dorothy and her friends flee up the stairs, the patterns on the floor look like pools of blood.

The wonderful Winged Monkeys of Oz.
In THE WIZ (1978), where they were called Flying Monkeys, they appeared as a sinister motorcycle gang. Images 3 and 4 are illustrations by W.W. Denslow for the first edition of THE WONDERFUL WIZARD OF OZ (1900). Next up we see the Monkeys in the 1939 movie adaptation, and an illustration by Anton Loeb for a 1950 edition of the novel. Then the 1975 THE WIZ Broadway versions, Mr. Burns and his own flying monkeys—“Fly, my pretties, fly!”—and a photo from THE WIZ LIVE (2015), where the characters were called the Winged Warriors.
Choose your nightmare…
