Covers of vintage Dutch crime/thriller/mystery/horror novels. Now, I happen to be Dutch so I’ll translate the titles.

De jazzband van den duivel (THE DEVIL’S JAZZ BAND). What a magnificent title.

Het teeken van den dood (THE SIGN OF DEATH).

De doode hand (THE DEAD HAND).

Slangeneiland (SNAKE ISLAND) and Duel der maskers (DUEL OF THE MASKS).

De dood heeft lange benen (DEATH HAS LONG LEGS). Well, so do I.

All these and more, many more, can be found HERE.

Edinburgh’s mysterious miniature coffins. Found in 1836 in a secluded spot on the north-east side of Arthur’s Seat, these 17 wooden figurines (of which 8 survive) are still a puzzle. My favorite explanation has to be that the figurines are linked to mass murderers, Burke and Hare, and that someone staged a kind of mimic burial to honor the duo’s 17 victims. Who knows.

As a kid, I was fascinated by the girl on the Belinda cigarettes pack, a brand my mother smoked. All through my childhood, her beautiful face was somewhere nearby, in the corner of my eye. It’s a familiar face to me—familiar in its elusiveness.

The illustration, originally from 1974, is by Frans Mettes (1909-1984).
