Drawings by Ton van de Ven (above) and original designer, Anton Pieck (below) for Dutch theme park, Efteling—an enchanted place remembered very fondly by the present author. It’s not a park that relies on one or two big fairground attractions and the rest is filler and souvenir shops: it’s a deep, dreamlike world and there is magic in every corner. Even the trashcans talk to you, and say “Thank you” when you throw something in them.

If my love of dark fantasy and folklore has its origins somewhere, it has to be there, among the high, whispering trees, haunted clock towers and mysterious, shimmering lakes of Efteling. I used to envy the birds that lived there.

Images of Dutch fantasy-themed amusement park, Efteling. These are mainly postcards from the 1980s, when I visited it; the park is much bigger now. In fact, it’s huge.

The dragon (last image) became livid when you came near its chest of gold, breathing smoke into your little kid face and readying itself to pounce you. I was genuinely frightened. The Haunted Castle’s storytelling demon (image 7) was another true horror, it just casually sat there in the waiting room, sharing a tale of blood and death. One of the tombs in the graveyard read, “Puella Innocenta”—“innocent girl”. They weren’t kidding around.

Some of illustrator Anton Pieck’s designs for Dutch theme park, Efteling.

The park opened in 1952, and is considered to be one of the best parks in Europe. It is a magical place, I visited it several times when I was a kid and I remember every single visit.

Old maps of Dutch fantasy-themed amusement park, De Efteling. I often visited it as a kid: magical days. It kicked my creative tendencies in high gear; at home I immediately started drawing everything I remembered, surrounded by the crates of stuff I had bought at the gift shop: books, toys, soundtracks, pens–and old maps such as these.

Whenever I can’t sleep, I roam the old park in my mind.
